Trachlight
Stylet and Tracheal Lightwand
Notes/Precautions:
- The handle and wand are not designed for sterilization by the user.
- The lubricant used on the endotracheal tube and wand should not contain
any topical anesthetics or other active ingredients. These chemicals will
degrade the plastic
- Do not submerge the handle or tracheal lightwand connectors in liquids.
- Decontamination of the Trachlight handle, non-sterile wand and stylet is
necessary before initial use and following each use.
- If the handle will not be used for long periods of time, remove the batteries
to avoid possible damage from battery leakage.
- To remove batteries, open the lid using a coin to rotate the latch counter-clockwise.
Remove the three AAA alkaline batteries and then press the lid into position
and turn the latch clockwise to lock. Lid uses an o-ring seal which may require
a gentle prying to remove it when it is unlocked. Before starting a procedure,
check the batteries by turning the unit on after installing a wand. A red
indicator means the batteries must be replaced. If no light comes on, check
the battery orientation as depicted inside the handle. If the light blinks,
the green and red battery indicators may alternate if the batteries are low.
Handle and Multi-Use Wand Decontamination
- Important: The decontamination procedures apply to the handle, non-sterile
multi-use wand and stylet when unpacking and installing batteries.
- Trachlight parts are made of durable materials which may be reprocessed
using the specified liquid chemicals to achieve a high level of disinfection.
- Always function test the Trachlight assembly following completion of decontamination
procedure.
Handle Cleaning & Decontamination Procedure
- Preparation for Cleaning: Important - Before removing wand from the handle
after use, wipe off contaminants on wand with a gauze pad saturated with 70%
isopropyl alcohol (paying particular attention to the inside of the clamp)
to minimize cleaning time required later. This minimizes bioburden transfer
from wand to handle.
- Caution: Do not immerse the handle in liquids. The handle is not designed
for sterilization by the user.
- Function Test - following reassembly 1) snap the stylet into the wand connector.
Install wand on handle. Move power switch to the ON position. Lamp should
illuminate, green battery indicator should also illuminate. Wand connector
should slide easily on Trachlight handle rail, while wand lamp remains illuminated
for approximately 30 seconds before beginning to flash.
- Non-Sterile Multi-Use Wand Decontamination Procedure: The Trachlight Non-Sterile
Multi-Use Wand is intended for multi-patient use and should not be sterilized.
After completion of the decontamination procedures and Function Test, mark
the check-off boxes on the wand with indelible ink to track the number of
uses. Discard after 10 uses to ensure optimal performance.
Decontamination Procedure
User Responsibility: It is the user's responsibility to follow the recommended
method of decontamination and testing.
Important: Before removing wand from the handle follow the procedure below
to minimize cleaning time required later. After use: Wipe off contaminants with
a gauze pad saturated with 70% isopropyl alcohol.
Wand and Stylet Cleaning Sequence: Caution - Do not submerge wand connector
or allow cleaning fluids into the stylet lumen of the wand. If this does occur,
discard the wand.
Wand: Wash the wand with stylet in place using soap or mild detergent and warm
water. Rinse in warm water. Wipe the wand connector with a gauze pad saturated
with 70% isopropyl alcohol. Inspect wand and connector carefully to insure all
foreign matter has been removed. Repeat cleaning sequence if necessary.
Stylet: Withdraw stylet and clean in accordance with wand cleaning instructions.
Preparation for Liquid Chemical High-Level Disinfection Sequence:
Glutaraldehyde: Ratio 3.4%, Soak 20 Minutes Sodium Hypochlorite (1:20 Household
Bleach:Water): Ratio .27%, Soak 5 Minutes Virkon (For International Use): Ratio
1%, Soak 20 Minutes
Liquid Chemical High-Level Disinfection Sequence:
Caution: Do not submerge wand connector or allow cleaning fluids into stylet
lumen of the wand. If this does occur, discard the wand. Wand and Stylet: Immerse
the wand shaft in the disinfectant, only to the highest centimeter marking.
Submerge the stylet in disinfectant. After soaking for the pre-scribed times,
thoroughly rinse the wand and stylet with warm water; allow to air dry.
Wand Inspection Procedure
Important: After decontamination, and prior to reassembly, thoroughly inspect
all parts and assemblies for damage and excessive or unusual wear. Discard any
damaged or obviously unserviceable items. Indications for discarding wand are
loose protective lamp cap, damaged wand shaft, loosening of wand shaft to connector
bond, excessively bent stylet that no longer fits, darkened or dim bulb, and
excessive stylet stiffness. After inspection, perform function test.
